Mérode M Installation
The Library
The Merode Club, Brussels
June 2024
As part of the immersive evening at The Merode in June 2024, a performative installation was unveiled in the club’s Library — a striking homage to light, transformation, and impermanence.
At the heart of the space stood a monumental candle sculpture in the shape of The Merode’s iconic "M": a piece measuring 120 x 120 cm and 40 cm in height, meticulously crafted from over 200 kilograms of soy wax and embedded with 188 cotton wicks. Divided into three sculptural blocks, the installation rested on a mirrored base that reflected its glowing presence and slowly evolving form.
As night fell, all 188 wicks were lit simultaneously, initiating a live, durational burn that continued throughout the evening. The sculpture gradually transformed — its wax melting, warping, and cascading — leaving behind flowing textures and soft trails of wax that spilled over the mirrored plinth and onto the floor. This evolving landscape became both a meditative focal point and a metaphor: light as creation, decay, and renewal.
A sensory performance rooted in slowness and ritual, the Library installation invited guests to contemplate the passing of time through flame, form, and reflection — a candle not simply as an object, but as a living gesture.
